Neilson Hays Library hosts a night of Brahms and Mahler

Neilson Hays Library is hosting “Romantic Reveries: Brahms & Mahler Piano Quartets”, an evening of piano quartets presented as part of R2’s International Concert Series, on Saturday, at 7.30pm.
The works by Gustav Mahler and Johannes Brahms, though from different periods of their careers, offer a glimpse into their unique contributions to the piano quartet genre, blending introspection with bold expressivity.
Known for his symphonies and orchestral songs, Mahler composed Piano Quartet In A Minor when he was a student in Vienna. This incomplete work consists of only one surviving movement, a dramatic and passionate Allegro.
The composition reveals the young Mahler’s command of Romantic idioms, clearly influenced by composers like Brahms and Schumann. Even though it is a youthful work, it showcases his budding skill in crafting complex textures and moods.
A staple of the chamber music repertoire, Brahms’ Piano Quartet In G Minor, Op 25 is known for its structural innovation, blending classical forms with Romantic expressiveness.
Consisting of four movements that blend complexity, warmth and fiery folk influences, the quartet captures Brahms at his most inventive, balancing formal mastery with emotive power.
The programme will be performed by Rhys Watkins on viola, Catherina Lee on violin, Alison Rhind on piano and Steffan Morris on cello.
Tickets cost 950 baht (850 baht for members) and can be purchased from neilsonhayslibrary.org or at the library.
Call 02-233-1731.
